Königsberg Jewish Community Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 1815

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains assorted primary and secondary materials relevant to the former German-Jewish community of Königsberg, including programs from the synagogue and local Jewish organizations, curricula for Jewish education in Königsberg, and materials on the development of a prayer book for the New Synagogue.

Folder one contains various materials, primarily programs for a variety of synagogue services, as well as programs for Jewish fraternal organizations. There is also a short memoir of life in the community, a photograph of the synagogue taken shortly after the Kristallnacht pogrom, and clippings from community newspapers. Most of the items in the second folder are curricula for religious education, but there is a bit of correspondence with officials in the Prussian education ministry. The third folder contains a printed list of registered members of the Königsberg Jewish community who had the right to vote in community elections (1927), as well as a handwritten list of deportees. The following folder comprises meeting minutes of a committee, chaired by Hermann Vogelstein and Felix Perles, charged with revising and translating the old community prayer book into German. The partial manuscript in the final folder is Vogelstein's draft of the new prayer book.
