Scope and Contents

This collection includes the following materials:

Correspondence on various topics, including Weil's libel suit against Henry Torres in 1942, his restitution case, and the organization of victims of Nazi persecution. Correspondents include Konrad Adenauer, Frederick Aron, Philipp Auerbach, Manfred George, Alfred Hirschberg, Joseph Klibansky, Alexandre Millerand, Henry Morgenthau, Fritz Moses, Joseph Panholzer, Kurt Rosenfeld, Paul Tager, and Julius Weigert.

Diaries (with photos) of World War I experiences, internment in La Vernet camp, 1940, and a trip to Germany in 1948.

Clippings of articles by and about Weil, and on politics in Alsace and Lorraine before and after World War I, on Jews in Weimar and Nazi Germany and on emigration, antisemitism, and restitution.

Manuscripts of books by Weil, and of articles, essays, and speeches about the Dreyfus Affair, Jews in Germany, and other topics.

Material on the Kartell-Convent deutscher Studenten juedischen Glaubens, including meeting minutes, correspondence, circulars, and clippings.

History and genealogy of the Weil family.

Biographical Note

Born in Saarlouis on April 4, 1883, Bruno Weil received his doctorate in law at the University of Wuerzburg in 1906, and was a lawyer in Strasbourg, 1910-1914, and Berlin, 1920-1935. He was executive secretary of the Centralverein deutscher Staatsbuerger juedischen Glaubens and active in the Deutsche Demokratische Partei (DDP). In 1935 he emigrated to Argentina, and he lived in France, 1939-1940, before emigrating to the United States. In America, he was a founder of the Axis Victims League and the American Association of Former European Jurists. Weil died in New York City on November 11, 1961.

Abstract

This collection includes historical and genealogical information about the Weil family. Also included is correspondence regarding Bruno Weil's restitution case as well as the organization of Nazi persecution victims. World War I diaries and manuscripts of books written by Weil are also part of the collection.
