Scope and Content Note

The Cambridge Hebrew Women's Aid Society Records contain bound ledgers of meeting minutes from 1914-1969. There are also Xeroxed copies of minutes from 1914-1922. The collection contains information related to Society philanthropic activities, such as donations to the Cancer Society and the Tuberculosis Society, as well as a record of disbursement of funds to families and individuals in need. Also included are records documenting the Society's various social activities, for example, raffles, rummage sales, and luncheons.

Historical Note

In 1898, nine women were granted a charter to form a corporation known as the Cambridge Hebrew Ladies Educational Society for the purpose of teaching the Hebrew language to Jewish children. The society was renamed the Cambridge Hebrew Women's Aid Society in 1914, and reorganized to include a broad range of philanthropic causes, including the care of tubercular patients and provision of Passover food to the needy. The Society was dissolved in 1978.

Abstract
