Abstract: The Cambridge Hebrew Ladies Educational Society was first formed in 1898 for the purpose of teaching the Hebrew language to Jewish children. The society was renamed the Cambridge Hebrew Women's Aid Society in 1914, and reorganized to include a broad range of philanthropic causes, including the care of tubercular patients and provision of Passover food to the needy. The collection contains bound ledgers of meeting minutes from 1914-1969.

Historical Note

In 1898, nine women were granted a charter to form a corporation known as the Cambridge Hebrew Ladies Educational Society for the purpose of teaching the Hebrew language to Jewish children. The society was renamed the Cambridge Hebrew Women's Aid Society in 1914, and reorganized to include a broad range of philanthropic causes, including the care of tubercular patients and provision of Passover food to the needy. The Society was dissolved in 1978.

Scope and Content Note

The Cambridge Hebrew Women's Aid Society Records contain bound ledgers of meeting minutes from 1914-1969. There are also Xeroxed copies of minutes from 1914-1922. The collection contains information related to Society philanthropic activities, such as donations to the Cancer Society and the Tuberculosis Society, as well as a record of disbursement of funds to families and individuals in need. Also included are records documenting the Society's various social activities, for example, raffles, rummage sales, and luncheons.

Scope and Content:

The series contains handwritten ledgers of meeting minutes from 1914-1969, with information related to records of disbursement of funds to individual cases and to charitable organizations, and social activities. The meeting minutes from the early days of the Women's Aid Society, where philanthropy mainly included charitable donations to families and individuals, are of particular interest. Information related to Society donations to Hadassah, the Zionist women's organization, and a presentation by a visiting member of the Tuberculosis Society, a charitable organization devoted to study of the disease and care of tubercular patients, is also included. The collection also contains information related to Society events, such as luncheons, raffles and rummage sales.
