Biographical Note
Samuel Oppenheim, American lawyer and historian, was born in New York City on December 2, 1859 to Isaac and Melia Oppenheim. Educated at the College of the City of New York and Columbia Law School, he was admitted to the New York Bar in 1885. As a lawyer, he worked with noted attorneys Simon Sterne and Oscar S. Straus. Oppenheim served as secretary of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors from 1889-1891 and assistant general counsel from 1896-1901 for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company. He also served as secretary of the Central Park Involvement Company from 1887-1901 and as the recording secretary of the American Jewish Historical Society from 1914 to 1927. Other affiliations included the New York State Historical Association, Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the London Shorthand Society, and the Judaeans, a Jewish community organization in New York.
In addition to his legal work, and perhaps what he is best known for is his efforts to better understand the history of Jews in the Americas, and in particular, those living in the colonial period. His research was not limited to those in the British colonies but also encompassed those living in the Dutch colonies in what is modern-day Brazil, New York, and Suriname. Much of Oppenheim's writings can be found in the Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society.
He passed away on August 11, 1928, being survived by his siblings and their children.

Scope and Content Note
This collection documents the research of Samuel Oppenheim, who researched the history of Jews living in the Americas during the 17th – 19th centuries, particularly those who lived in what would become New York City. The collection contains transcripts, photocopies, court records, correspondence, essays, and notebooks that document the knowledge Oppenheim had accumulated pertaining to his subject.
Series I of this collection documents the information of nearly 1100 Jewish colonists of the Dutch and English colonies of modern-day New York and the surrounding area. The files contained within this series are the transcriptions made by Oppenheim of original documents from various, unstated collections. Such documents range from newspaper accounts and court records to registries and ledgers. Series II of this collection is similar to Series I, but documents groups of Jews in the colonial period.
Series III of this collection consists of Oppenheim’s transcripts of the early records of Congregation Shearith Israel. Series IV contains his typewritten copies of the correspondence of noted Jewish colonist and merchant Aaron Lopez. While Series V consists of typewritten copies of newspaper advertisements relating to companies or groups owned or catering to the Jewish community in the period of 1735-1799.
The portion of the collection dealing with the Dutch West India Company, Series VI, is divided into four subseries relating to the Jewish communities in Amsterdam and the colonies of the Dutch West India Company. This series contains various photocopies that include a transcription of the document in its original language and its translation into English. The first subseries documents some of the administrative activities of the Company. The second subseries documents the plight of Jews living in the former Dutch colonies of Brazil after the reconquest by the Portuguese. The third subseries contains material related to documenting the activities of the Dutch West India Company in New Netherlands, the area under Dutch control on the east coast of North America. Subseries 4 describes the relocation and settlement by Jews from Amsterdam and other Dutch colonies to Suriname.
Series VII provides a glimpse into the Mayor's Court of the City of New York from the mid-seventeenth century to the mid-eighteenth century with original court documents. Such items include a call for an election of a new constable to replace the deceased Samuel Levy and an answer by one Saul Dovalle to a complaint brought by Abraham De Lucena to the Mayor’s Court of New York for failure to pay a debt.
The above-mentioned series contains information that Oppenheim uncovered during the process of his research. The remaining series in this collection represent his thoughts and writings about his discoveries. Series VIII: Writings contain drafts and copies of most of the articles and speeches he made pertaining to Jews in the Americas. Series IX contains correspondence pertaining to his research made between 1905 and 1927. Series X contains his notebooks, written in Pittman Shorthand, that contain an abundance of information.
Return to the Top of PageArrangement
The Samuel Oppenheim Papers have been processed prior to the creation of this finding aid. An earlier processing produced a finding aid that has been lost and much of the information contained in this finding aid came from that processing. In 2006, Marvin Rusinek created a container list using MS WORD along with rudimentary descriptive components. This finding aid is the result of further processing which included the removal of empty folders, conversion of the MS WORD document into an XML document, the completion of descriptive elements and various refinements. Major revisions include the changing the title of Series VI, from Brazil-Suriname to the Dutch West India Company and dividing the series into subseries for better access and clarity of content. The creation of Series VII: Early Court Records of New York City came from the process of this reorganiztion. This material had previously been included in the series mentioned above but the chronological coverage of the documents went beyond the time period of the Dutch West India Company and therefore a new series was created to show their uniqueness. The arrangement of the collection is given below; however, there are peculiarities pertaining to the Series and Subseries and as a result should be consulted further by the researcher in regards to the overall arrangement of the collection.
- Series I: Individuals
- Series II: Groups of Jews
- Series III: Congregation Shearith Israel (New York)
- Series IV: Correspondence of Aaron Lopez (1731-1782)
- Series V: Newspaper Advertisements
- Series VI: Dutch West India Company
- Series VII: Early Court Records of New York City
- Series VIII: Writings
- Series IX: Correspondence
- Series X: Shorthand Notebooks

Series I: Individuals, undated, 1655-1915. |
|||
| This series is in English. | |||
| 6.45 linear feet (12.90 boxes), Box 1, Folder 1 to Box 13, Folder 42. | |||
Arrangement:Sensitivity to Oppenheim’s original arrangement has been maintained despite the removal of the above-mentioned folders listed in Appendix A. This series has been organized alphabetically by individual last names. Material within each folder has been arranged chronologically. For married couples the wives share folders with their husbands, therefore married women are listed by their married names. In names with variant spellings, the spelling that seemed to be the most common was chosen by Oppenheim. Surnames that include the prefix “da” or “de” are listed according to the major part of the name, i.e. Isaac da Costa is listed as Costa, Isaac da. Furthermore, it appears that no attempt had been made to distinguish between persons bearing the same name where positive identification is unavailable; the information has been placed in one folder. In certain cases, two contemporary individuals bore the same name and resided in the same city at the same time. Where a positive identification could not be made as to whom the data pertained, the information was arbitrarily placed in a single folder. Care should thus be exercised by the researcher in the use of the collection. |

Scope and Content:This series documents the information of nearly 1100 Jewish colonists of the Dutch and English colonies of modern day New York and the surrounding area. The files contained within this series are the transcriptions made by Oppenheim of original named documents from various, unstated collections. Such documents range from newspaper accounts and court records to registries and ledgers. This series served as an index for Oppenheim’s research, with all known Jews on a particular document being given an individual folder. On most folders numerous cross references are noted to other folders where a particular individual is mentioned. In some cases, the folders only contained the name of the individual and the cross references, this situation added to the bulk of the series. Such folders have been removed from the series to minimize the footprint of the collection. In order to prevent data loss from the removal of these folders the information has been maintained in the list found below. |

|||
Scope and Content:This series, similar to Series I, documents groups of Jews in the colonial period. Significant sources consulted by Oppenheim include Assessments, Chancery Minutes, Circuit Minutes, Controllers Office, Electors, Books of Entry, Libers of Conveyances, New York Inventories and others. This series served a similar purpose to the material related to individuals. Many of the folders have cross references to other folders. In cases where the folder was empty and merely listed a cross reference, it was removed. |
