Scope and Content Note

The E. Michael Bluestone Collection contains primarily the professional writings and correspondence of Michael Bluestone and his associates.

There is an abundance of manuscripts, publications, and clippings by and about E. Michael Bluestone and his colleagues. Of special interest and importance are a large number of studies pertaining to specific hospitals and hospital needs in various communities in the United States, and materials relating to the Hadassah Medical Organization.

The collection includes correspondence with colleagues and people prominent in the Jewish communal world, including Hayim Nahman Bialik, Albert Einstein, Abraham Flexner, Fiorello La Guardia, Fannie Hurst, David de Sola Pool, and Nathan Straus.

Additionally, the collection contains a transcript of tape-recorded interviews with E. Michael Bluestone prepared, by the William E. Wiener Oral History Library in New York; a volume of poems entitled "An Exchange of Light Verse," together with reactions from readers; a presentation volume of the collected writings of his administrative group at Montefiore Hospital; a picture-book of Palestine presented to him by his staff at Hadassah Medical Organization; and certificates and diplomas.

Most of the materials comprising the collection are in bound volumes and scrapbooks arranged by E. Michael Bluestone.

Biographical Note

Dr. E. Michael Bluestone was one of the foremost authorities in the field of medical care and hospital administration. A surgeon by training, Bluestone was appointed Director of Montefiore Hospital in New York in 1928. Before that, he served as director of the Hadassah medical organization in Palestine, 1926-1928, and as assistant director of Mount Sinai Hospital, 1920-1926. He also worked as a consultant to the World Health Organization, Hadassah, and the Hebrew University in Israel.

After retiring from his post as Director at Montefiore Hospital in 1952, he devoted his life to teaching, writing, and consulting.
