Scope and Content Note
The collection includes three letters from Samuel Gompers to his wife, written while he was travelling on union business; a letter supporting the German trade union movement; and an autographed card. Also includes a letter from Mr. Schwab in which he comments on Samuel Gompers and his life; there were to be used in a biography written by Mrs. Gompers.

Biographical Note
Samuel Gompers was born in London on January 27, 1850, to a family of cigar makers. The family moved to the United States in 1863. There, Samuel Gompers became a labor leader, and one of the leading figures in the American labor movement: he organized the American Federation of Labor and served as its president from 1886 until his death; and he advocated for shorter hours, higher wages, and unity amongst different craft unions. He
Samuel Gompers died on December 13, 1924.
