Biographical Note1
Dr. Samuel Goodman was a graduate of the University of the City of New York, Medical Department (now known as Cornell Medical School) and was registered to practice medicine on November 19, 1894. One of the first Jewish physicians in Boston, he served as a house officer at Bellevue Hospital in New York before settling in Boston in 1893. He founded the Boston Medical Society, the earliest Jewish Medical Society in the region, and participated in the early planning stages of Beth Israel Hospital. According to his daughter, he called the first meeting in 1896. He died in 1940.

Scope and Content Note
This collection contains newspaper clippings, letters and a photograph pertaining to the medical career of Dr. Samuel Goodman, one of Boston's earliest Jewish physicians and founder of the Boston Medical Society. Letters to the Jewish Advocate from Goodman's daughter include basic biographical information and clarify the role Goodman played in the establishment of Beth Israel Hospital. Also included is a Board of Registration in Medicine certificate, dated 1917, and published letters and articles written by Goodman. The photograph depicts Goodman holding a suitcase with petitions regarding the Leo Frank case.
