Scope and Content Note

Series A: Guggenheim family contains records of the family Guggenheim, including family tree, family history, vital records, obituaries, papers of family members who emigrated to Chile, and other papers of family members.

Series B: Communities contains material concerning the Jewish communities of Offenbach and Worms from the eighteenth through the twentieth century, including correspondence, reports, circulars, regulations, programs, memorabilia, and press clippings.

Series C: Letters to Siegfried Guggenheim contains correspondence of Guggenheim and his wife with individuals, including Bertha Badt-Strauss, Leo Baeck, Leo Baerwald, Ismar Elbogen, Oskar Maria Graf, Max Gruenewald, Hermann Hesse, Emil Herz, Otto Hirsch, Magdalena Kasch, Guido Kisch, Adolf Kober, Thomas Mann, Jacob Picard, Nathan Stein, Selma Stern-Taeubler, Eugen Taeubler, Friedrich Torberg, Alfred Wiener, Karl Wolfskehl, and Stefan Zweig.

Series D: Offenbacher Haggadah contains material concerning the Offenbacher Haggadah, edited by Guggenheim and acclaimed for its content and the quality of its printing, including correspondence, manuscripts, drafts, typography samples, printing blocks, and proofs.

Series E: Celebrities contains materials on the Paul Ehrlich Foundation, Hermann Hesse, Magdalena Kasch, and Karl Wolfskehl

Series F: Special Collection contains manuscripts, photos, and press clippings by Guggenheim and others on various topics, including: Jewish traditions, ritual art, Jews in Nazi Germany, and contemporary celebrities.

Series G: Ritual Art contains a bound volume with 55 photographs of ritual art.

Biographical Note

Born in Worms on November 12, 1873, Siegfried Guggenheim was a lawyer, and chairman of the Jewish community of Offenbach from 1933 to 1938. He emigrated to the United States in 1939 and died in New York City on January 30, 1961.
