Biographical Note

Dagobert Broh was born in Berlin, Germany on July 20, 1904. The following year, on October 7, 1905, his brother Manfred was born. Their parents, Georg Broh and Betty Broh née Lippmann, married in Berlin, Germany in 1902. Dagobert Broh immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1937, following his brother Manfred, who had arrived there earlier in the decade. Dagobert had a career in the textile import/export business. After his retirement, he studied at Concordia University, earned a bachelor’s degree and eventually earned a Ph.D. in History in 1996, at the age of 92. Broh’s dissertation, “The History of the Newspaper Aufbau, 1934-1948”, examines the publication’s significance within the culture of German-speaking Jewish immigrants in the United States.
