Grete Simon, M.D. Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection holds the papers of Dr. Grete Simon and her family from the 1880s to 1977. It includes the personal correspondence of Grete, Adolf and Martha Simon, official papers, and family photographs.
Series I holds the personal correspondence of Grete Simon, including letters and postcards Grete received from the author, art historian, and journalist Julie Braun-Vogelstein. It also contains letters from Hedwig Ehrlich, widow of Paul Ehrlich.
Series II holds official and personal papers and correspondence of Adolf and Martha Simon as well as family photographs.
Series III holds miscellaneous materials such as a document regarding a research request, a drawing of Robert Liehenthal, and two publications issued by the National Council of Jewish Women.

Biographical Note
Grete Simon was born in Elbing, near Koenigsberg, East Prussia (today Kaliningrad, Russia) on November 20, 1895. She was the daughter of Dr. Adolf Simon and Martha Simon (née Borchardt). Her father, a doctor, died in 1908. Grete also became a doctor, practicing ophthalmology in Koenigsberg. In 1936/37, she immigrated to New York City, the National Council of Jewish Women having provided an affidavit for her. Her mother, Martha Simon, also emigrated some time in the following three years. Once in New City York, Grete resumed her practice and formed a friendship with Julie Braun-Vogelstein. She died October 30, 1987.

The Grete Simon, M.D. Collection holds the papers, correspondence and photographs of Dr. Grete Simon, Dr. Adolf Simon, and Martha Simon. The collection contains personal letters, official papers relating to Adolf Simon’s education and work, as well as family photographs.
