Scope and Content Note

Toni Oelsner's research works included in this collection refer to anti-Semitism in southern parts of medieval Germany. Her focus is in particular on economic processes and turbulences and their impact on the security of Jews in medieval southern Germany.

Among the material in Series I are newspaper articles by Toni Oelsner that were either published in German or in American newspapers. Correspondence, relating to professional issues, is included in Series I as well. Oelsner gave also an interview for a radio feature on Voice of America. The radio script that refers to anti-Jewish persecutions in medieval Endingen is also arranged in this series.

Academic typescripts in Series II are from the years 1966-1970. Some of Toni Oelsner's articles were published in the Germania Judaica. These articles and research notes for them are arranged in Subseries 2 and 3.

Biographical Note

Born in 1907, Toni Oelsner studied Sociology and History in Germany until 1934. Oelsner was active in various politically left-leaning organizations, before she immigrated to the United States via England in 1939, where she graduated from the New School for Social Research in New York with a Master's degree.

Abstract

The bulk of this collection consists of typescripts, research articles and notes as well as newspaper articles which the researcher and historian Toni Oelsner wrote on the subject of Jews in medieval Germany. Her research deals with anti-Judaic and anti-Semitic stereotypes, as they appeared in the Christian culture of southern Germany. In particular Oelsner analyzed economic processes and their impact on and creating of anti-Semitic harassment and persecution against Jewish communities in southern Germany. Research works that drew public attention relate to anti-Judaic violent persecutions in Endingen in the 1460s.

Separated Material

The Leo Baeck Institute holds research material that Toni Oelsner had requested from the German archive of the city of Augsburg and the Generallandesarchiv in Karlsruhe. It is microfilmed on reel MF 544. Among the material are Kaiser- and Koenigsurkunden as well as Buergerbuecher and Steuerbuecher. There are also research articles by Leopold Loewenstein (Geschichte der Juden am Bodensee und Umgebung) and J. Marmor (die Juden in Konstanz) on the reel.
