Scope and Content Note

The Helmuth Nathan Collection documents professional activities of Helmuth Nathan, physician, artists, teacher, and a historian of medicine.

The collection includes brochures, booklets, clippings, correspondence, financial documents, minutes, notes, off prints, photographs, drawings, and writings.

A large segment of the collection consists of Helmuth Nathan’s correspondence, both personal and professional.

The bulk of personal correspondence consists of the letters from his grateful patients, with correspondence with friends and relatives constituting but a fraction of the overall correspondence.

Professional correspondence includes correspondence with hospitals and other medical teaching facilities, such as Albert Einstein Medical Center, correspondence regarding publications in the scholarly magazines, and correspondence regarding various art festivals and exhibits.

Another large portion of the collection consists of various types of documents, such as educational - certificates, report cards, and diplomas; professional – certificates, awards, and letters of recommendation; financial documents – tax forms, bank statements, and materials pertaining to Nathan’s efforts to gain restitution.

Helmuth Nathan’s professional writings are well documented by an abundance of writings and printed materials, consisting of manuscripts and lectures, articles, reviews, and essays published in scholarly magazines and journals.

Other printed materials collected in the collection are relevant to art shows and art exhibits in which Helmuth Nathan participated.

Nathan’s writings cover topics such as history of medicine, ethical questions in medicine, and medical issues.

Also included here are Nathan’s collection of poems and hand-written medical books.

There is also a substantial amount of the original art work work by Helmuth Nathan, such as sketches and drawings, as well as photographs of his art work, photographs of the exhibits and art shows, and some personal and professional photographs.

Biographical Note

Helmuth Nathan, physician, teacher, and historian of medicine was born on October 26, 1901 in Hamburg, Germany.

He studied medicine and philosophy at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg and received his medical degree in 1925.

During the period between 1925 and his emigration in 1936, Helmuth Nathan had worked at a number of hospitals in Hamburg and wrote extensively on medical topics.

Dr. Nathan settled in New York in 1936 and became a successful physician.

He also had a life-long association with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he taught for many years.

In addition to being a successful physician, Helmuth Nathan was a well established artist, creating drawings, graphics, glass windows, and sculptures. He tried, and succeeded in bringing both of his passions - art and medicine - closer together. He brought precision and clarity of the medical world into his art and his love of arts into his writings on the history of medicine.

Dr Nathan wrote extensively on various medical topics, such as general surgery, surgical infections, pathology, and history of arts and medicine.

Helmuth Nathan died in New York in 1979.
