Scope and Content Note

Folder 1 contains four original, handwritten letters (+ typed transcripts) by Heinrich Graetz to Rabbi Alexander Stein in Worms, and four more letters to various colleagues.

Also included is Acht Briefe von H. Graetz im Besitz des L.B.I. New-York, a 7-page typescript by R. Michael with transcripts of the letters and explanatory footnotes. The letters are addressed to: Bacher, Wilhelm; Buber, Salomo; Jolowicz, Heymann; Loeb; and Stein, Alexander.

Folder 2 holds an obituary in Israelitische Wochenschrift Magdeburg, Sep. 10, 1891, and an article by Caesar Seligmann on occasion of Graetz’s 100th birthday in Frankfurter Zeitung, Oct. 1917.

Biographical Note

Heinrich Graetz was born October 31, 1817 in Posen, Russia (today Poland). He studied at universities in Breslau and Jena, before settling in Breslau, where he taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary. His work Geschichte der Juden was translated into many other languages and ignited worldwide interest in Jewish history. He died September 7, 1891 and was buried in Breslau.

The collection consists primarily of Heinrich Graetz’s correspondence with Rabbi Alexander Stein in Worms and others. Also included are printed obituaries.

Separated Material

Book reviews, correspondence, off-prints and clippings pertaining to Graetz may be found in folder 3 of the paper collection, which is not available in any other format.
