Bruno Strauss Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection showcases the historian Bruno Strauss's collection of correspondence and writings of the notable German Jewish intellectuals Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, and Martha Wertheimer. The largest groups of materials pertain to Cohen and Wertheimer, and consist of original correspondence as well as (for Cohen) offprints, programs, and other papers dating to the nineteenth and early 20th century. Most of Wertheimer's correspondence is addressed to Siegfried Guggenheim. Other materials include articles (1915, 1918) on Max and Abraham Lewandowsky, and a few letters from Franz Rosenzweig and Otto Wolfskehl, father of Karl Wolfskehl. Some of these may have passed down through the Strauss family (some of the letters are addressed to Strauss's father Abraham Strauss), others are addressed to Bruno Strauss.

Biographical Note
Bruno Strauss was a historian and philologist who lived from 1889-1969. He was raised in Marburg and studied there and in Berlin. From 1912-1938 he taught at the University of Berlin, but was forced to flee to Shreveport, Louisiana, United States, in 1939. He immediately gained employment at Centenary College in Shreveport, and taught history and German there until 1964.
