Scope and Content Note

Documentation from Falk's professional career, in particular with the United States Army Civil Censorship Division during and after World War II, makes up the bulk of the collection. This paperwork includes documents on raises and promotions, official memos, procedural documentation and training information, applications, and speeches on the political situation in Germany. Other materials in the collection document her education and other professional experience, and there is a small amount of personal correspondence, personal papers, and some personal financial documens. Among the education documents is a certificate from her time at the historic Philanthropin Jewish women's academy in Frankfurt am Main. Other professional documents show evidence of her employment in various clerical, editorial, and managerial positions, including for the American Federation of Labor, employment agencies, and the National Baby Show.

Biographical Note

Edith Falk, daughter of Karl Falk,of Miltenberg am Main was born on July 5, 1911 at Miltenberg. During the 1920s she attended high school and professional school in Miltenberg and Frankfurt, and from 1930-1931 she worked as a kindergarten teacher in Berlin. In 1935-1936 she moved with her father and stepmother to New York City. Until 1943, she continued working as a kindergarten teacher and as a freelancer for newspapers. From 1943-1948, she worked for the United States Army Civil Censorship Division, first domestically and then abroad in Germany.
