Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a number of vital and personal documents belonging to the Glaser, Bass, and Poseles (Port) families, which illustrate their personal and professional lives in early twentieth-century Europe and their experience of diaspora during the fascist era.

In particular, a number of birth, citizenship, and immigration documents are present, and some documents attest to Valerie and Franziska (Frances) Glaser's imprisonment at the camp in Gurs, France. Other materials include wax seals, Jahrzeit calendars, receipts for philanthropic donations, and a 'poetry album,' filled with drawings, poetry, and laudatory notes.

Biographical Note

The Glaser, Bass, and Poseles families were related by marriage: Valerie Poseles, Clara Poseles, and Walter Poseles (Walter Port) were siblings. Clara married Arthur Bass, and Valerie married Dr. Louis (Ludwig) Glaser. Valerie Glaser was the legal guardian of Franziska Glaser, later Frances Horowitz.

Dr. Louis (Ludwig) Glaser was a government lawyer in Vienna.

Louise Poseles was born 1878 in Rossetsch, Moravia (today Rozseč in the Czech Republic) and died 1939 In Shanghai, China. She was married to Albert Freund (ca. 1870, Rossetsch - 1945, Shanghai).

Separated Material

A painting by Otto Herschel dedicated to Frances Glaser has been removed to the LBI Art and Objects Collection.

A medal depicting Kaiser Franz Josef I, dated 1873, and cross-shaped medal reading Patriae ac Humanitati 1864-1914 have been removed to the LBI Art and Objects Collection.
