He served in the 5th Air Force from 1941-1945, during which time he was stationed in Australia and New Guinea. Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of personal papers of Julius Schellenberg relating primarily to his life as a young man in Goddelau, Germany, the first few years of his life in Brooklyn, New York after immigrating in 1937, and his experience in the 5th Air Force in 1942.

The partial inventory in folder 1 lists most of the items in this collection and includes a summary of the content of the letters in folders 6-9. The scrapbooks consist of typewritten descriptions and photographs of a bicycle trip and two boat trips that Julius Schellenberg undertook with friends in 1932, 1933, and 1934. The passport is photocopied, not original. The correspondence in folder 5 shows that Julius Schellenberg was able to gain credit for his Realgymnasium studies in Germany and get admitted to Brooklyn College in 1939. The family correspondence in folders 6-9 consists of handwritten letters on very thin paper. Most letters have messages from multiple people to Julius Schellenberg, his sister Irma, and her husband Hugo Oppenheimer. Correspondents include Julius and Irma’s parents Leopold and Klara Schellenberg as well as other family members or friends that signed with the first names Max, Auguste, Isidor, Klaus, and Gertrude. The military diary is a typewritten booklet that covers Julius Schellenberg’s experience in the U.S. Air Force from his departure to Australia in February 1942 to December of the same year. A photograph of the 5th Air Force is also included.
