Hamburg Jewish Community Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 193 / MF 346

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains correspondence and a large number of programs and announcements regarding the Jewish community in Hamburg, mostly during the 1930s.

In the first folder are materials, largely correspondence and announcements, related to the deprivations imposed on the community, such as the wearing of the Judenstern. There is also correspondence regarding the closure of the Jüdisches Lehrhaus (Franz Rosenzweig Gedächtnis-Stiftung) and a report on the state of the remaining community in 1947. The second folder consists of programs, cards, and announcements, regarding the youth movement and charitable initiatives. Folders three and four likewise contain ephemera relating to community institutions: in three are programs for synagogue services (including the consecration of a new synagogue in 1935), and in four are programs of the Kulturbund for the year 1938. Clippings from Hamburg Jewish community newspapers (mostly from the Hamburg edition of Israelitisches Familienblatt ) comprise folder five, including an illustrated insert on the occasion of the consecration of the new temple in 1931.

The remaining folders contain copied materials. Folder 6 houses a list of former Jewish residents who have provided their address to the city of Hamburg. Folder 7 contains photocopies of 19th century documents which for the most part concern Jewish educational institutions in Hamburg.
