Friedlaender Family Collection (Oppeln)
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains legal documents, correspondence, photographs, and manuscripts regarding the Friedlaender family of Oppeln and the brewery (Schlossbrauerei M. Friedlaender) which they owned.
The documents relating to property go back to the initial deeds of purchase for the family property (oldest document dates 1811 when it was owned by another Jewish individual) and end in 1939 with its confiscation by the Nazis. The correspondence of folder 2 includes letters between Robert Friedlaender-Precht and Ernst Lissauer. Also included in folder 2 is a family tree dating back to 1776.
The photo albums and certificates located in the 2 oversized folders are of particularly excellent quality and workmanship and offer numerous detailed views of the town of Oppeln and its buildings around the turn of the century.

Biographical Note
The Friedlaender family settled in Oppeln about 1833 when Marcus Friedlaender purchased real estate there and established a distilling firm, which later grew to a large enterprise and remained in the family for 3 generations. Marcus' son Siegfried was president of the Oppeln Jewish community for many years; he also sat on the town council and was an town elder (Stadtältester).
