Malvin Warschauer Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains two bound volumes of handwritten notes on individuals in Warschauer's Berlin Jewish congregation, which Warschauer used for eulogies at burial services. Although description varies from individual to individual, a typical entry includes such vital information as date and place of birth, name of spouse, names of children, occupation, cause of death, date of burial, and other biographical information. Inserted into these volumes are also several programs for burial services, some of which indicate the Weissensee Jewish cemetery as their site. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence, including original letters to Kurt Wilk and photocopies of letters from Albert Einstein and Leo Baeck. Other items of note are a longer biography of Warschauer written by his son James Walters, a map of the Weissensee Jewish cemetery, and a transcribed sermon by Warschauer.

Biographical Note
Malwin Warschauer was born in 1871 in Kanth, Lower Silesia, (today Kąty Wrocławskie, Poland), to the family of a timber merchant. He studied at the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin, which he later headed, and then served as a rabbi from circa 1900-1945. Biographical notes from his son indicate that he worked primarily in the Neue Synagoge in Berlin during the period 1900-1939, and thereafter was active in England. He emigrated to Woking, Surrey, England, at which time he changed his forename to Malvin. He died in England in 1957.
