Scope and Content Note

This collection contains some personal and family papers and a number of printed sermons and essays by Heimann Jolowicz and others; in many cases these materials appear to have been privately printed or printed only in a very limited run.

The personal papers include Jolowicz's diploma, a printed recommendation with a bibliography of Jolowicz's works, and a brief from a Prussian court asserting that Jolowicz was never involved in political trouble.

Family papers consist of a birth and a marriage certificate.

The printed matter includes copies of the following pamphlets be Jolowicz:

  1. Geist und Wesen israelitischer Religion ( Cöslin: C. G. Hendeß, 1847 )
  2. Rabbinisches Rechtsgutachten in einer wichtigen Ehescheidungsangelegenheit ( Königsberg: Gruber, 1857 )
  3. Ein Bruchstück aus dem Bibel-Commentar des Rabbi Salomo ben Isaak gen. Raschi, dedicated to Leopold Zunz on his 70th birthday, ( Königsberg: Gruber & Longgrien, 1864 )

There are also several items not written by Jolowicz:

Biographical Note

Rabbi and writer, born 1816 (in Coeslin/Koszalin?) and died 1875. Received a doctorate from the University of Kiel and was active as a rabbi in Marienwerder (Kwidzyn, Poland), Koszalin, and in London, England. He retired early and settled in Königsberg (Kaliningrad), where he wrote several theological and historical texts, as well as literary criticism.

Processing History

The former Jolowicz Family Collection, LBI AR 1686, a small collection of 3 items from the same donor and pertaining to the same family, was incorporated into this collection on 2011 January 28. These items are now housed in folder 2, family papers (Birth and marriage certificates).
