Abstract

The collection contains various documents relating to the Jewish communities in Chemnitz, Dresden and Hamburg in the late 1930s, as well as biographical information and personal documents regarding Manfred Saalheimer (1907-1967), legal representative of the Dresden Jewish community, and Josef Kahn (1881-?), president of the Chemnitz Jewish community. Also included are tributes to Otto Hirsch (1885-1941), president of Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland.

Biographical Note

Manfred Saalheimer was born 1907 in Wuerzburg. He was a lawyer, working with the Jewish community in Dresden and the Saxon community federation (Gemeindeverband). He emigrated to Canada, where he died in 1967.

Josef Kahn (1881 - ?) was president of the Chemnitz Jewish Community; he emigrated to Palestine in 1939.

Otto Hirsch was born 1885 in Stuttgart. He served as president of the Vertretung der Juden in Deutschland, and was killed 1941 in Bergen-Belsen.
