Clara Levysohn Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 3778

Scope and Content Note

Ulrich Levysohn met and married Clara Herrmann in 1876. Series I of this collection contains Ulrich's daily letters to his fiancée.

By far the largest part of the collection are letters from Fritz Mauthner to Clara Levysohn. It is apparent from these letters that a close relationship existed between Clara and Fritz Mauthner, that Clara's husband intervened in 1895 and that from this time on Clara and Fritz Mauthner agreed to communicate by correspondence only, with an occasional short meeting. This collection contains the letters of Fritz Mauthner, but not Clara’s responses. There are 388 letters, 77 cards and 11 telegrams by Fritz Mauthner from 1895 to 1908. In addition, there are 756 pages in diary format from 1905 to 1907. The letters and diaries are informative not only about Clara Levysohn and Fritz Mauthner personally, but also about Mauthner's friends, his travels, and especially about his work which he regularly discussed with Clara. Series II also includes some handwritten copies of his letters by Clara Levysohn.

Processing Information

This collection was reprocessed in 2012 following the arrangement of its existing item-level inventory, with no changes made in the order of folders or items. The description used in the former inventory was also retained in the current finding aid and forms the present collection-level scope and content note. The former parts II and III were combined to form Series II. For preservation purposes, folded items were unfolded when possible and overfilled folders were further subdivided without altering the order of items.
