Scope and Content Note

This collection contains published and manuscript music by composer Walther Hirschberg. The handwritten music, to the extent it is titled and identifiable, is in most cases a manuscript version of one of the published items found in this collection. The published music consists primarily of Lieder, with lyrics by German and French poets such as Rilke and Verlaine. The opus numbers, where known, are provided. The Various folder includes programs for a house concert of Hirschberg's music; a short biographical note; and correspondence about the donation of the collection to the Leo Baeck Institute.

Biographical Note

Composer and music critic Rudolf Walther Hirschberg (1889, Berlin - 1960, Berlin) attended the Phillip Scharwenka conservatory in Berlin and studied composition under Hermann Kretschmar. He was chief editor of Signale für die Musikalische Welt from 1929 to 1933, and continued as a music critic until 1935. Hirschberg was interned at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in November 1938. After his release, he emigrated to Paris and then to Lyon. During the war, Hirschberg hid with the sculptor Georges Salendre. He returned to Berlin in 1958 and died shortly thereafter.

Books of music removed to the LBI Library include one privately-bound book of piano music once belonging to Bertha Hofmann (Martha, oder: der Markt zu Richmond, music by Friedrich von Flotow, arranged by Carl Czerny); one privately-bound book of collected piano music with the name Rosa Steckerl on the cover; a three-book set of religious music, with the titles Gesänge für das Neujahrsfest und den Versöhnungstag, Gesänge für die drei Feste, and Gesänge bei Confirmationen, Trauungen, Leichenbestattungen und bei verschiedenen anderen Gelegenheiten; Nagykanizsaer gottesdienstliche Gesänge für das ganze Jahr by Leo Kartschmaroff (1911); Schire Simroh – Synagogale Kompositionen zeitgenössicher Autoren (1930); and Achtzehn Liturgische Psalmen für Soli und Chor arranged by Lewandowski.

The original Walter Hirschberg Collection (2 linear feet) was determined to be multiple separate collections. The Hirschberg material remains the Walter Hirschberg Collection (AR 3840). A donation of materials formerly belonging to cantor Simon Spier is now the Simon Spier Estate Collection (AR 11956). A set of material relating to composer Richard Fuchs is now the Richard Fuchs Collection (AR 25552). One folder of sheet music is now the Zosa Szajkowski Sheet Music Collection (AR 11952). One folder of material relating to an opera based on Franz Kafka's Amerika by Ellis B. Kohs is the Ellis B. Kohs Collection (AR 11953). Material relating to cantor Reuben M.
