Scope and Content Note

The collection contains certificates, diplomas, notes, correspondence, and other miscellaneous materials relating to Adolf Cohn.

Except for some 1968 correspondence related to Cohn family history, all documents are original material from Cohn's lifetime. In additional to some biographical clippings regarding Cohn, folder 3 also contains several clippings related to other Cohn family members. Folder 4 contains a booklet of celebratory songs for the anniversary of Dr. Abraham Geiger as Rabbi in Breslau. The 1846 Statues of the Verein für Geschichte und Alterthum Schlesiens are also in folder 4.

Biographical Note

Ludwig Adolf (Adolph) Cohn was born in 1834 in Breslau. In 1851 he was already studying history at the university, first in Breslau, then in Berlin. His dissertation was written on Heinrich von Löwen. After this dissertation he converted to Christianity and completed his Habilitation (second dissertation required in Germany to become a university professor) in Göttingen in 1857. He published several books in his short life and died in 1871 in Göttingen.
