Adolf Loebel Collection

The Adolf Loebel Collection consists of a large amount of newspaper clippings and other press materials, with much of the material centered on the events of the Holocaust in the area of Baden in Germany. A few clippings relate to the experiences of members of the Loebel family, especially Ellen Loebl and Adolf Loebel. In addition to newspaper clippings the collection holds some copies of official correspondence, circular letters and photographs.

Some information on Loebel family members will be found in Series I. Here are included newspaper clippings that tell the story of Ellen Loebl's life in hiding in Germany and the recognition given the woman who aided her. Clippings and correspondence that show Adolf Loebel's support of the recently founded Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung are also present.

The bulk of the collection is composed of newspaper clippings of the 1930s and 1940s, primarily found in Series II and IV. Series II holds newspaper clippings on various Jewish communities in Germany, most of which are located in Baden-Württemberg. Clippings on Heidelberg show Adolf Loebel's role as head of the community there. Series IV comprises an extensive collection of newspaper clippings from both Jewish and non-Jewish newspapers, which cover a plethora of subjects. Among Subseries 2 of Series IV are several clippings from National Socialist newspapers. Later clippings often describe memorials of the events of the Holocaust, among other topics.

Series III contains papers of the Nazi years, with many circular letters of official regulations and limitations on Jews along with a few copies of official correspondence of the Reichsvereinigung der Juden. In addition this series includes a lengthy list of names of Jews; an accompanying note indicates that most of these individuals were deported.
