Scope and Content Note

This collection consists mainly of business records of the Bavarian State Restitution Office in Munich (Bayerisches Landesentschädigungsamt München), the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe, and the Coordination Office of the International Working Group for Restitution and Indemnification Claims in the Federal Republic of Germany (Koordinierungsbüro der Internationalen Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Wiedergutmachungs- und Entschädigungsfragen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, München). These business records include newsletters, bulletins, statistics, internal communications, and minutes. Also included are several pieces of correspondence between Ferdinand L. Herrmann and the Bavarian State Restitution Office as well as between Herrmann and clients whom he assisted with restitution claims. Two issues of the Bavarian Law and Ordinance Gazette (Bayerisches Gesetz und Verordnungsblatt) are also included. With the exception of a few pieces of correspondence, all of the records in the collection were created in 1950.

Biographical Note

Ferdinand Lehman Herrmann was born in 1902 in Tauberbischofsheim, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1940 and became a naturalized citizen in 1945. Herrmann worked as a public accountant and tax specialist. He was in contact with the Bavarian State Restitution Office and assisted others in their restitution efforts.

Abstract

This collection consists mainly of newsletters, bulletins, statistics, internal communications, and minutes from the Bavarian State Restitution Office in Munich, the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe, and the Coordination Office of the International Working Group for Restitution and Indemnification Claims in the Federal Republic of Germany. Correspondence of Ferdinand L. Herrmann (1902-1976) concerning restitution and two issues of the Bavarian Law and Ordinance Gazette are also included.

The collection is arranged in alphabetical order by the first letter of the English title of the organization’s name or by the last name of the individual. Materials were separated by document type. Where the same document type is contained in several folders, these folders are ordered chronologically.
