Scope and Content Note

Correspondence to the Viennese psychoanalyst Otto Isakower, both before and after his emigration to New York, comprises the bulk of this collection. There are also various notes and drafts of Isakower's writings.

The first small folder contains a handful of letters, many of a professional nature, sent to Isakower as a practicing psychoanalyst in Vienna. Throughout the next folders are several letters to personal and professional colleagues, mostly Viennese exiles and many associated with Viennese psychoanalytic and cultural circles. Notable among these are the letters from the Hitschmann family, all of which include pastel drawings. The final folder of correspondence to Isakower's wife Salomea primarily consists of condolence letters from Otto Isakower's personal friends and professional colleagues. The second series contains a wide variety of Isakower's personal and professional papers, predominantly research notes. Notable among these are the notes pertaining to the "Zelmanowicz case" (as they are labeled), which include dream logs and which appear to have arisen during Isakower's treatment of patient. The final folder contains some sundry artifacts from Isakower's time as a student in Vienna, as well as from his brief time as a refugee in England. In this folder is also an obituary for Isakower, which contains a short biography.
