Richard Lebrecht Collection
Scope and Content Note
The Richard Lebrecht Collection includes genealogical and other types of materials pertaining to the Lebrecht, Gutmann, and Einstein families as well as materials dealing with the personal life and professional activities of Richard Lebrecht.
The collection includes a wealth of original genealogical materials such as charts, tables, documents, photographs, and correspondence as well as materials pertaining to Richard Lebrecht.
There are genealogical charts and tables, documents such as birth, death, and marriage certificates, last wills, travel documents (including a travel permit of Solomon Gutmann from 1826), correspondence of family members, numerous family photographs, and memoirs.
Materials dealing with Richard Lebrecht consist of correspondence with his mother and friends, printed materials, college writings and short stories, photographs, and educational and professional certificates and awards. There is also a small amount of documents documenting Richard Lebrecht’s efforts to save family members left in Germany.
However, aside from Richard Lebrecht’s professional-related materials after his immigration to the United States there are no materials that shed light on Lebrecht’s family business, neither are there any business or professional-related materials about any other members of the Lebrecht, Gutmann, and Einstein families.

Biographical Note
Richard Lebrecht was born on July 12th, 1909 in Ulm, Germany. At the age of 15 he quit school to become an apprentice at a bank in Ulm. Following his father’s death in 1925 he began working for the family leather company. He became the head of the company in 1932.
After Hitler came into power, Richard Lebrecht moved to France and then to the United States in 1936. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941. After he was discharged with honors in 1946 he got a job at the Army Map Service.
Richard Lebrecht earned a BA in 1950 and an MA in History in 1954.
He later transferred to the Economic Development Administration and eventually became project officer in the Appalachian Regional Commission.
After his retirement in 1970, Richard Lebrecht moved to Seattle.
Richard Lebrecht died on March 28th, 2002.
