Scope and Content Note

The Walter Eberstadt Collection documents Walter Eberstadt’s efforts to recover art works by the Dutch painter Jan Toorop.

Before the war, Toorop’s paintings were in the possession of Walter Eberstadt’ grandparents, Ernst and Gertrud Flersheim. During the war the paintings were appropriated by the Nazi government and later surfaced in private collections and at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam (Netherlands).

The collection consist of Walter Eberstadt’s correspondence with lawyers, art historians, museum, and government organizations in Holland and Germany. Additional materials include printed materials, invoices, and publications about Jan Toorop’s art.

Biographical Note

Walter A. Eberstadt was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He emigrated to England in 1935 and to the United States in 1951. He was an honorary president of the American Council on Germany and a Trustee for the Frick Collection. Walter A. Eberstadt died on February 26, 2014.
