Scope and Content Note

The collection contains the research materials generated during the writing of the article "Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy & Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. Portrait iconographies," in Music in Art. International journal for music iconography, vol. 33, no. 1-2 (Spring-Fall 2008), p. 317-371, by Janet Wasserman. The research material consists primarily of reprints of articles, photocopies of book chapters and articles, and printouts of web pages. These include images of the works mentioned in the published iconography.

Included in this collection are the published article, galley proofs, and correspondence with the publisher. Correspondence with artists, archives, museums, libraries, and others concerning specific images of Felix Mendelssohn and Fanny Hensel are arranged alphabetically by artist name, which corresponds to the article and the original arrangement of the files in box 2.

The research materials, such as reprints, photocopies, printouts, and notes, cover 19th through 21st-century artistic depictions of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. They include a wide range of biographical information about individual artists, as well as scholarly works about Mendelssohn and Hensel. These materials are found in boxes 2 and 3, and were not digitized, microfilmed, or individually described. They are available by visiting the LBI Archives.

Arrangement

Individually described folders are arranged alphabetically in Series I. The remainder of the research files, Series II, were left as found. The files in box 2, relating to individual artists who depicted Felix Mendelssohn and Fanny Hensel, are arranged alphabetically by artist name.
